3557 Temperature-Elevated Hydration Effect on Stress Behaviour of Cemented Paste Backfill

Mine stope is typically backfilled with Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB). The CPB provides a regional underground stability and also a reduction of aboveground tailings accumulation. During backfilling, a phenomenon known as arching occurs and affects the stress distribution of the CPB. The change in temperature due to uncontrolled heat transfer from the surrounding rock mass and/or generation from hydration process complicates the stress distribution development of CPB. This paper presents results of the investigation on the effects of hydration to CPB behaviour when backfilled into a narrow wall model using Uncemented Paste Backfill (UCPB) as controlled sample. The main finding revealed that UCPB is able to reestablish arching effects, as the frictional properties of UCPB is less restrictive regardless of the curing temperature. Ultimately, the peak stress generated is considerably lower than CPB which suggest the possibility to optimise mix design of backfill material based on the required backfill strength and frictional properties.
