Mechanism and Control Method of Deformation in Gob-Side Entry with Thick and Hard Roof Strata

Deformation of gob-side entry has always been a critical issue in coal mine stability control. To resolve the serious deformation and support difficulties of gob-side entry in thick-hard roof longwall face (THRLF) caused by dynamic pressure, this paper elucidated the characteristics and the mechanism of the deformation during longwall face retreat. The results indicated that the core reason was the superimposition of the advanced abutment stress caused by longwall face mining and movement of the lateral roof over the chain pillar. Then, the deformation control method of cutting off lateral roof (COLR) over the chain pillar was proposed. The simulation results show that the roof stress and deformation of gob-side entry decreases remarkedly after the lateral roof was cut. The achievements of this study would provide guidance for the control of deformation in gob-side entry where thick and hard roof strata are presented.
