Abstract

Fatigue life improvement can be achieved through surface treatments such as laser shock peening (LSP).  LSP introduces residual stresses, penetrating 1 mm into the surface of the material.  LSP resulted in a fatigue life increase of 5.4 times for AA7075-T6, when the surface roughness was 0.2 micrometres. The effect of LSP on fatigue performance for Ti-6Al-4V and AISI316 shows an improvement in fatigue life by 5 times and 1.7 times respectively.  Fractography and crack path analysis were used to investigate the effect of LSP on the fracture. The results show that the efficacy of the LSP process varies between different materials.
