Abstract

In the presence of sodium isopropyl xanthate and potassium ethyl xanthate, the enhancement of the shear flocculation of galena by ultrasound was investigated in this study, and the variations of flocculation efficiency, contact angle, and zeta potential of the mineral with the concentration of surfactants were presented. It was determined that the enhancement of flocculation with ultrasonic could be provided at a high power level of the ultrasound device. Moreover, the ultrasonic process enhanced the flocculation of galena particles with these surfactants in accordance with the increase in the contact angles. On the other hand, the ultrasonic process led to an increase in the negativity of zeta potential of galena particles with the surfactants. These findings indicated that the ultrasonic treatment promoted the adsorption of surfactants onto the mineral surfaces, as a result of which the hydrophobicity of the particle surfaces enhanced and thereby the flocculation of galena mineral improved.
