Abstract

Dimension stone mining is gaining popularity because of its widespread constructional usage. Diamond wire saw is a popular mining technique for dimension stone production these days. Estimation of the production cost using this technique is critical for these operations. This research developed a production cost model for the dimension stone mining of granite using diamond wire saw. Actual data were gathered and analyzed from a granitic dolerite operation in Pakistan to identify the cost components in dimension stone mining. Fuel, labour, consumables, and maintenance costs were identified as the four initial cost components in this operation. We developed a regression-based dimension stone production cost model incorporating the statistically significant variables. The data presented a strong correlation of production cost with fuel, labour, and consumables cost. The model was verified using actual production cost data which explained 97% (i.e. R2 = 0.97) variance in the data between the predicted and actual production cost valued for the selected production.
